Roles & Responsibilities for Painting Repair
Construction Engineers (Supervisors)
- Responsible for the execution and management of the construction safety, quality, progress control and follow-up of all the relevant plans.
- Assist in compilation of Painting Construction Procedure.
- Check the issuance of the equipment and materials
- Assist in the interpretation of the drawings and solve the problems, if any, by providing the suggestions due to the design errors or inconsistencies.
- Responsible for the drafting, confirmation and the checking of the material take-off in the event that those drawings have to be modified.
- With the professional capability of drawing interpretation, progress appraisal, management, etc., and carry out the selection of the foremen.
- The supervisor shall carry out the work for the areas designated Construction Engineer and QC Engineer
Painting Technicians
- The Painting Technicians shall be responsible for the selection of adequate instruments, equipment, tools, materials, filling-out of the required forms.
- Completion of the work using correct methods under the supervision of the Foremen and Supervisor.
Safety officer
- The safety officer shall work with the supervisor to insure all the personnel involved ware proper PPEs.
- Check the all signs and barrication and monitor the area when the painting work is going on.
Handling & Storage of Painting Materials
All paint materials received only in original packing.
Check the batch number date etc.
Ensure that primer, under coats and final coat as applicable for individual coating systems shall be fully compatible and that the appropriate coatings are obtained from the same manufacturer.
All Paint and Thinners shall be stored in a well-ventilated place at storage temperatures as recommended in the Manufacturer’s data sheet and MSDS.
Coating materials used at construction sites must be covered with appropriate canvas, tarpaulins, or equivalent for a temporary storage.
The max. Storage time for paints shall be as per the manufacturer recommendation.
Touch up material shall be same as or compatible to the shop applied coating.
Touchup Paint Method Statement
Flange mating faces should be masked before any painting operation.
The spool tags should be protected.
Supervisor records the Relative Humidity, Ambient Temperature and Substrate temperature before the start of painting and at every 4 hours of interval.
The Painting QC inspector checks the recorded Relative Humidity are less than 85%, the air and the metal temperature is above 3°C than the Dew Point Temperature.
Volume of thinner shall be limited to the extent specified by the manufacturer’s standard for thinning of paints.
Angle, corners, sharp edges, weld seams, weld joints and damaged area and other surface irregularities shall be stripe coated.
Paints shall not be applied when it is raining.
Pre-Check surface weld spatter/slag/irregularities.
Standard power tool shall be used for preparation & surface cleaning.
Paint shall be applied evenly, to produce smooth coating for the required thickness.
Touch up should be done on each coat before applying the next coat, if any damages or uncoated areas.
First Coat/Primer-Minimum DFT requirement for Support and Tank.
DFT Per Coat (µ) 50 (75)
Number of Coats 1
Application Method Brush/Roller
First Coat/Primer-Minimum DFT requirement for Pipe
DFT Per Coat (µ) 125
Number of Coats 2
Application Method Brush/Roller
Damaged surfaces to be roughened to remove loose coats and corners should be feathered with sand paper for subsequence preparation for coating systems.
Touch up material shall be same as, or compatible to, the shop applied coat.
Touch up should follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.
Issue a written request for inspection 24 Hours in advance for the readiness of Test Inspection to client/consultant QC representative.
Quality & HSE Requirements for Touchup Paint Works
Approved paint manufacture shall be selected.
Appropriate respiratory protection shall be used during hand tool or power to cleaning operation where required.
All necessary tests shall be made for identifying the presence of toxic gases, chemical or explosive mixtures in accordance with applicable standard.
