Touchup Paint Method for Protective Painting and Coating of Piping and Supports

This piping repair method statement defines and guides to painting and coating works for any kind of project or structure. This method statement is applicable to the protective painting and coating for piping and supports at any construction project site.

The latest revision of the project specifications and following international standards shall be used as references and are part of this mechanical method statement in the execution of work.

All paint materials received only in original packing.

Check the batch number date etc.

Ensure that primer, under coats and final coat as applicable for individual coating systems shall be fully compatible and that the appropriate coatings are obtained from the same manufacturer.

All Paint and Thinners shall be stored in a well-ventilated place at storage temperatures as recommended in the Manufacturer’s data sheet and MSDS.

Coating materials used at construction sites must be covered with appropriate canvas, tarpaulins, or equivalent for a temporary storage.

The max. Storage time for paints shall be as per the manufacturer recommendation.

Touch up material shall be same as or compatible to the shop applied coating.

Touchup Paint Method Statement

Flange mating faces should be masked before any painting operation.

The spool tags should be protected.

Supervisor records the Relative Humidity, Ambient Temperature and Substrate temperature before the start of painting and at every 4 hours of interval.

The Painting QC inspector checks the recorded Relative Humidity are less than 85%, the air and the metal temperature is above 3°C than the Dew Point Temperature.

Volume of thinner shall be limited to the extent specified by the manufacturer’s standard for thinning of paints.

Angle, corners, sharp edges, weld seams, weld joints and damaged area and other surface irregularities shall be stripe coated.

Paints shall not be applied when it is raining.

Pre-Check surface weld spatter/slag/irregularities.

Standard power tool shall be used for preparation & surface cleaning.

Paint shall be applied evenly, to produce smooth coating for the required thickness.

Touch up should be done on each coat before applying the next coat, if any damages or uncoated areas.

Damaged surfaces to be roughened to remove loose coats and corners should be feathered with sand paper for subsequence preparation for coating systems.

Touch up material shall be same as, or compatible to, the shop applied coat.

Touch up should follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Issue a written request for inspection 24 Hours in advance for the readiness of Test Inspection to client/consultant QC representative.

Quality & HSE Requirements for Touchup Paint Works

Approved paint manufacture shall be selected.

Appropriate respiratory protection shall be used during hand tool or power to cleaning operation where required.

All necessary tests shall be made for identifying the presence of toxic gases, chemical or explosive mixtures in accordance with applicable standard.

Paints shall be applied using approved techniques relevant to the application requirement, such techniques shall include airless and air pressure spray, and pressure fed roller, roller and brush.

Daily log containing the following data shall be maintained:

Control the source of ignition in the paint mixing area.

Prevent contact of paint and solvents with eyes and skin.

All waste paint, cleaning solvents, etc. must be properly disposed off at an approved disposal area.

Personnel involve shall wear respirator type mask or cartridge type.

Paint on work at height shall have safe working platform and wear full body harness.

All workforces are provided with the following personal protective equipment:
